Photographer Paripat Kittison captured one of the most festive photos from PMI’s 2024 Christmas Photo Contest. With a fog machine and a bubble nozzle, Paripat created a snowy landscape in his tropical country Thailand with the touch of a button and a little experimenting. Read more about how he used the SmokeGENIE and how you can incorporate the smoke bubbles in your own shoot.
What’s the idea behind this shoot?
I'm from a tropical country where we don't get snow, so I wanted to convey the excitement of the first snow along with the piles of gift boxes during the festive season like the iconic imagery I often saw in media growing up. When I saw the bubble nozzle, I immediately wanted to try and create this.
How did the model respond to the use of smoke bubbles during the shoot?
At first, she was very excited because she imagined something entirely different and not a convenient hand held machine, it was all very exciting. She really engaged with it, it was like experiencing childlike wonder again.
What specific settings or techniques did you find most effective when working with the fog machine and the smoke bubbles?
I used a SmokeGENIE with the Bubble Nozzle to create this scene. My technique was to shoot the flash from behind to make the smoke bubbles stand out and I put a black backdrop behind the model to make the smoke bubbles more visible. Also, when releasing the smoke bubbles, I tried not to let the smoke bubbles fall on the model too much to really achieve the snowing effect.
