Creator of the Week: Using a Fog Machine for a Fantasy Shoot with Delgado

In this Creator of the Week edition, we chat with Delgado, the First Prize Winner of our 2024 Mini Halloween Contest! His creative entry, “Lending a Hand for the Coven”,  showcased an impressive blend of originality and festive spirit. Delgado incorporated the fog machine SmokeGENIE with the brand-new Bubble Nozzle, adding a unique and mesmerizing element to his work. In this Q&A, we delve into Delgado's inspiration and process for the Halloween shoot, as well as how he utilized this cutting-edge tool to enhance his creation. Join us as we explore the mind behind the winning entry and celebrate his achievement in this exciting contest!

What’s the idea behind this shoot?

The name, like the concept underwent multiple changes before reaching the final version. Initially called “Long Distance Witchery,” then “It Takes a Village,” before finally becoming “Lending a Hand for the Coven.” The vision was to capture a moment of urgency, that summoned witches from across the globe or even dimensions. Yet, due to travel constraints, they forged a portal, a bridge between distance and realms. Where each witch would light their candle, providing support and energy for the coven.

What techniques did you use to ensure the smoke appeared how you wanted?

We used the bubble nozzle because it allowed us to contain and release a significant amount of smoke, which was crucial for creating the illusion of a portal around the hands. Additionally, we attached an extension tube to the fog machine to add smoke effects around one candle while simultaneously releasing it across to another.

Can you share your favourite moment from the shoot?

My favorite moment was definitely seeing the vision come together. We knew from our experience with lighting and production that it should work in theory, but this was our first time using the bubble nozzle, especially in outdoor conditions with wind. It was such a great feeling to watch it all come to life.

Any tips and tricks for our users who want to use the bubble nozzle?

Backlight! Smoke really stands out when it’s backlit. Start experimenting with the fog machine and see how it adds texture to the scene and reveals those dramatic light streaks. But soon, and most importantly, start viewing it as more than just a tool for texture and light effects. See it as a key element of the scene, something essential for conveying the message. But, have fun with it.

Would you like to explore other themes or concepts using a fog machine in future projects?

Putting into practice what I’ve preached, using smoke as a prop. One idea that comes to mind is creating a scene where someone’s soul or essence is being drawn out. I’m all about practical effects whenever possible. Off the top of my head, I’d approach it by using the bubble nozzle to release smoke at the side of the head and then use the back end of a fan to pull the smoke in. One day, we’ll plan it out, test it, and make it happen.
